Under the "Environmental Programme for the Danube River Basin" of the ICPDR (International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River", and with the assistance of the UNDP/GEF (United Nations Development Programme - Global Environment Facility), a new "Danube Pollution Reduction Programme" (PRP) was developed. Following a number of National Planning Workshops and National Reviews providing in 1998 detail environmental data for all countries within the Danube Basin, a "Transboundary Analysis" was undertaken in 1999 for the entire region where "Sub-River Basins" were defined as new planning units for transboundary co-operation.

The 200 pages Report "Thematic Maps of the Danube River Basin" gives an overview of social and economic characteristics of this region, with particular attention to 329 Hot Spots, 51 Significant Impact Areas and over 430 hydraulic structures. It uses national expert data and adds further information, including sets of 12 special GIS maps and 7 tables.

An overview of the contents of the Report is given below. See also graphical reproduction in the magazine Danube Watch vol. 1/99, pp. 6 and vol. 2/99 p. 5 and 11.

The entire report is available at the Secretariat of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (e-mail: icpdr@unvienna.org).
